•A large phyto-restoration program was carried out in a pyritic waste affected soil.•The potential of four native shrubs for restoration of polluted soils was studied.•Plants reached full adult size and showed low TEs transfer from soils to shoots.•Retama sphaerocarpa showed elevated tolerance to low soil quality.
