•High resolution LOLA data is useful for crater counting in polar shadowed regions.•Shoemaker, Faustini, and Haworth are Pre-Nectarian; Shackleton is Late Imbrian.•Differential crater retention on sloping surfaces dominates sub-km crater density.•Volatiles in these craters do not significantly influence crater density or age.
