•Optimizing Cl− for depassivation with pH–Cr(VI) evolution of Fe0-EC was proposed.•Evolution of pH and Cr(VI) in dissolution II could avoid passivation in Fe0-EC.•Minimum Cl− for depassivation was determined in passivation III of Fe0-EC.•Proposed method was more accurate and stable to optimize Cl− compared with RSM.
