The investigators first conducted a literature review to identify clinical variables associated with TT. Subsequently, they prospectively evaluated these variables in patients presenting to Boston Children’s Hospital with acute scrotal pain between 2009 and 2012. Scrotal Doppler ultrasound, urinalysis, urine culture, and blood count were obtained in all patients. Using prediction models of the clinical variables that were independently associated with TT, the investigators created a scoring system that stratified patients into low, medium, and high risk categories.
