Proto-patterns for growing a community of practice

Web technologies can support the online exchange of practical knowledge. While the infrastructure for online communities is well understood, the facilitators' activities for supporting the emergence of a community of practice remain an open challenge. This article presents a first step towards a pattern language for growing communities of practice. Based on experiences in large distributed communities, we present good practices for organizations and facilitators who want to encourage active exchange on practical knowledge within the organization and beyond.
