Proportion of MEA Design by Considering the Current Density Distribution

We developed a self-water management type of Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) for Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs). The self-water management MEA was designed by combining gas-diffusion layers (GDLs) with different properties. A GDL with high drainage properties was placed in the gas inlet, where the electrochemical reaction was active, and a GDL with high hydration properties was placed in the gas outlet. As a result, the cell performance was improved by using two types of GDLs. The joint of the two GDLs with different properties should be located at the rib of the separator. If the SGD-FP is applied to the cathode, the humidity of the cathode gas should be marginally reduced.
