Polarized Gaseous 3he Targets

The technique of spin exchange between laser optically pumped Rb vapor and 3He has recently produced 70% polarization of 1020 atoms/cm3 in a 4 cm3 volume. This has been used to produce polarized neutrons of energy up to 10 eV with 20% polarization at 0.75 eV. The technique is being extended to produce accelerator targets at Princeton (for low energy charged particle beams), Bates (for polarized electron bombardment up to 880 MeV) and at Triumf (for polarized proton bombardment at 290 MeV).This talk will provide a primer on the spin exchange technique and focus on the technical aspects of producing a fixed, external target. These technical aspects include target cell design and materials, beam induced 3He relaxation and laser technology. The possibility will be discussed of using this technique to provide a flow of polarized 3He nuclei for internal target physics.
