Channel characteristics in the LED traffic lights to vehicles communications

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), involving the traffic lights to vehicle communication, is the indispensable part in modern intelligent city. For the development of the ITS, the channel characteristics of the LED traffic lights to vehicle communication are analyzed in our paper, where the communication data rates for different ranges are evaluated based on the real scenarios of the background noise and path losses, which are experimentally obtained by a testing system built upon the commercial off-the-shelf components. Range-rate performance comparisons for different average noise levels are also carried out by using the red/yellow/green LED lights. The results show that to achieve the data rate of kilobits per second at a communication range of 100 m is realizable under the ordinary noise scenario, which is of great significance for the practical applications. © 2014 WIT Press.
