A Novel Signaling Technique for High-speed Backplane Transceiver

This paper presents a case study for performance evaluation of 25 Gb/s backplane transceiver based on different equalization schemes and signaling techniques. A novel QPSK signaling is proposed and applied to the 25 Gb/s backplane transceiver. The experimental results show that the proposed QPSK signaling can achieve at least 1.97 ㏈ larger signal-to-noise ratio than traditional NRZ, Duobinary, and PAM-4 signaling. In addition, for a target bit-error-rate of 10 -15 , the proposed QPSK signaling has the largest sampling range compared with other existing backplane signaling techniques. Furthermore, compared with traditional NRZ-based backplane transceiver, proposed QPSK signaling can relief equalizer design by saving power consumption of 24.98 %.
