A convenient procedure for the synthesis of 3-styryl-1,5-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed under solvent-free grinding conditions. alpha,beta-Unsaturated aldehydes react with aromatic ketones to give the corresponding dienone products, then followed by a Michael addition producing 3-styryl-1,5-dicarbonyl compounds in the presence of NaOH at room temperature. The advantages of this procedure are solvent-free, catalyst-free, mild reaction conditions, simple procedure, and short reaction time.
