The human brain consists of approximately 10 11 10 11 (one hundred thousand million, or one hundred US billion) brain cells, or neurons. There are approximately 10 15 10 15 (one thousand million million, or one thousand US quadrillion) connections between all neurons in the human brain. Pathologies that affect brain connectivity include Alzheimer’ schizophrenia and epilepsy. Stroke, tumors, and multiple-sclerosis are also associated with brain lesions which can also affect brain networks. Understanding of the brain networks involved helps to predict the behavioral consequences of the various pathologies.
