•Fingolimod (FTY720) improves long-term cognitive deficits after neonatal hyperoxia.•Hyperoxia-related long-term microstructural abnormalities are diminished by FTY720.•FTY720 attenuates hyperoxia-induced hypomyelination.•Oligodendrocyte degeneration and impaired maturation are ameliorated by FTY720.•FTY720 reduces cerebral hyperoxia-induced oxidative stress and inflammation.
