•The dual-doped LiNi0.05-xMgxMn2O4 is successfully prepared by microwave sintering.•The crystal structure stability is significantly enhanced through the dual-doping and microwave synthesis technique.•The materials exhibit excellent cycle stability at elevated temperature and high rate.•The doped LiMn2O4 cathodes have lower dissolution of manganese at elevated temperature.
