Urban tree damage estimation using airborne laser scanner data and geographic information systems: An example from 2007 Oklahoma ice storm

•ALS data and GIS is integrated for urban tree damage assessment from ice storms.•Single and grouped trees are extracted by two tree extraction techniques.•Methodology can detect tree stem/height damage with >81% accuracy.•Methodology can detect tree canopy damage with >42% accuracy.•Technique allows urban foresters to assess, monitor, and manage growth of urban trees.
