•Knock-out of the Arabidopsis BNT1 TIR–NBS–LRR gene triggers a pleiotropic phenotype.•High levels of hormones and genes related to plant stress were detected in bnt1-1.•BNT1 is required for plant survival and dealing with environmental perturbations.
