The structure of the first compound of R3PBr5 stoichiometry has been elucidated and shown to be the unusual salt, {[(o-SCH3C6H4)3PBr][Br]·0.5(μ-Br2)3}n. The structure consists of a high symmetry (C3) cation which acts as a template around a C3 symmetric 2D polybromide network. This polymeric network is built up of 18-membered hexagonal rings consisting of six bromide anions and six dibromine molecules.
