•Investigated the surface energy of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) using IGC.•Examined the effect of moisture and temperature on their surface energetics.•The surface interaction forces at the rock–fluid interface were quantified.•Acid–base interactions affected due to polar probe solubility in surface water.•Provides insight about the wetting characteristics of carbonate rocks.
