•Polyhydroxy surfactants are suitable surfactants for the stabilization of SLN.•Their use leads to small sized and physically stable SLN.•Their use enables the production of “skin-friendly” SLN for dermal drug delivery.•Physico-chemical properties of surfactants strongly influence size/stability of SLN.•Alkyl chain lengths of lipid matrix of SLN and stabilizer should be similar.
