•Fast pyrolysis and catalytic upgrading of Citrus unshiu peel was performed.•Compared to wood, Citrus unshiu peel produced larger amounts of aromatics.•Catalytic lifetime of HZSM-5 was longer than HBETA due to its low coke content.
