•Hypoxia induced respiratory suppression and impaired some medullary neurons.•Hypoxia increased the levels of some oxidative markers of medulla.•Hypoxia decreased the levels of some anti-apoptotic markers of medulla.•Hydrogen sulfide ameliorated the changes of all the parameters mentioned above.
