Evaluating the effectiveness of overstory cover as a surrogate for bird community diversity and population trends

•Four longitudinal studies spanning >1000km used to test surrogacy relationships.•Overstory cover had a similar relationship to bird diversity in three of four regions.•Changes in overstory did not predict individual species’ population trends.•Clear objectives inform surrogate evaluation and identification of limitations.
