Trends and Contribution for Smart Home Research: An Assessment of Academic Articles from 1997-2010

While many past studies focus on "smart home" research, little is known about this stream of research. Begun as an effort to assess the trends and contribution on the field of "smart home", this study surveys 465 smart home publications appearing in 194 journals from 1997 to October 2010. In this study, we define the keywords and do the inquiry to search the related articles in ISI Web of Science (WOS) database and present our findings, such as categorizations of article types, key publication venues, and the trends of publications by years. Our study showed that the amount of articles about "smart home" increased from 1997 to 2010, which indicates that smart home's influence is on the increase. We also find that "smart home" research has attracted numbers of researchers during the fourteen years covered in this study. Researchers from America, Asia and Europe have made the most contributions to this fielding in our findings. This study offers a snapshot of the field of "smart home" and raises a number of questions for future research on related topics.
