•Alkaline silicic magmatic rocks from NW Vietnam yield late Permian zircon U–Pb ages.•Positive εNd(t) values of the Permian zircons indicate a moderately deplete mantle source.•Zircon Hf isotopes were less modified by crustal assimilation than whole-rock Nd isotope.•Silicic magmatic rocks in NW Vietnam and the Panxi regions are cogenetic.•Phan Si Pan-Tu Le region represents a displaced portion of the ELIP inner zone.
