Sleep-related memory consolidation in patients with borderline personality disorder

Previous research suggests that sleep quality may be reduced in Borderline Personality disorder (BPD) patients. As recent findings point to the importance of sleep for memory consolidation, sleep-related memory consolidation was investigated in 15 BPD patients (mean age=26.1±6.1, all female) and 15 healthy controls (mean age=25.6±6.8, all female). Before and after the study night, declarative and procedural memory tasks were carried out. Sleep was recorded by a portable sleep recording device (QUISI®) in n=9 patients and n=12 healthy controls. No significant group differences were found regarding percentage of overnight improvement in the declarative and procedural memory tasks, nor were any significant differences observed in sleep characteristics.
