•A significant correlation between DISC1 polymorphisms (rs821616) and SCZ was proved in the Chinese population.•TT genotype of DISC1 polymorphisms (rs821616) might increase the risk of SCZ in the Japanese population.•A allele of DISC1 polymorphisms (rs821597) might increase the risk of SCZ in the Chinese population.
