Pedestrians' perception and response towards vehicles during road-crossing at nighttime.

•Perception of pedestrian to oncoming traffic in night condition for six simulated scenarios was studied.•Using active light sources (such as LED) between headlights significantly improves time taken to recognize vehicle recognition.•No significant difference in time taken to determine oncoming traffic without active light source between headlights.
