•Porphyrin appended SWCNTs has been synthesized by a facile synthetic route.•Porphyrin-SWCNT nanocomposite exhibited enhanced light absorption in visible region.•Nanocomposite utilized for antimicrobial PDT towards the death of S. aureus cells.•The enhanced PDT was attributed in presence of porphyrin due to ROS generation.
