The Robotics Concept Inventory.

Robotics became one of the main subjects in modern STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and training. Many teaching approaches like lecture, hands-on exercises, project and problem-based and competition-driven courses compete for best learning outcome [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. However, the community lacks a tool to assess the level of robotics-specific competencies of students for a better-targeted teaching and training and especially for a quantitative standardized assessment of the specific learning and teaching approaches. Concept inventories are such a tool and used in many fields already [7]. They allow assessment of students’ understanding of the most central concepts of a domain. When students undergo the test at the beginning and the end of a course or training, the relative performance gives a numerical value for the teaching and learning gain and answers to distinct questions may highlight individual problems. With this paper we present the first version of a complete Robotics concept inventory.
