Improving software design reasoning-A reminder card approach.

•We studied design reasoning of 5 professional teams and 12 student teams.•The test groups were given reminder cards to help them reason.•Reminder cards increase the amount of reasoning and design rationale significantly.•The more reasoning the design teams do, the more design rationale they generate.•Reminder cards help identify assumptions, trade-offs, problems and solutions.
