•We describe the evaluation of 4 commercial circulating DNA purification kits.•We compared extraction of high and low molecular weight DNA from blood plasma.•Different kits demonstrated different efficiencies for purifying DNA.•Limitations of the extraction method should be considered when analysing experimental results.
