Modified Blumgart anastomosis with the "complete packing method" reduces the incidence of pancreatic fistula and complications after resection of the head of the pancreas.

•We changed our anastomosis method to a modified Blumgart anastomosis.•We added infectious control to the changed anastomosis method.•This combination method significantly reduced the POPF rate.•This combination also reduced other postoperative complications including SSI.•A multifactorial approach is needed to improve postoperative outcomes.
