•Adjuvant chemotherapy improves survival in a defined high-risk group of soft tissue sarcoma patients.•Tumour size, vascular invasion, necrosis and infiltrative peripheral growth pattern seemingly depict patients in need for adjuvant chemotherapy.•Maintaining dose intensity of doxorubicin and ifosfamide impacts positively on survival.
