•Distress tolerance in adolescents is a transdiagnostic behavior.•Greater left frontal alpha asymmetry predicted lower distress tolerance on a challenging task.•This may suggest that greater left frontal alpha asymmetry in adolescents is associated with escape from punishment/aversion.
