•Smoke sensor responded in a shorter time compared to CO sensors in most of tests.•Flame sensor produced the shortest response times in all tests.•The appropriate locations for CO sensors were the center and the front locations.•Airflow velocity had an insignificant effect on the CO sensor response.•The responses of CO sensors and smoke sensors were affected by the fire location.
