Evaluation of effective treatment depth in skin cancer treatments with electronic brachytherapy.

Based on the results of this simulation, excessive pressure applied on the skin by the applicator can drastically alter the PDD and effective treatment depth. The effect is most pronounced for the 10- and 20-mm cones, which tend to be used most frequently. Inappropriate applicator placement may therefore result in significant consequences such as excessive dose to the target, severe skin reaction, permanent discoloration, skin indentation, and poor overall cosmesis upon completion of treatment.
