•Convulsive seizures can be consistently observed within 6 weeks of TBI.•Righting reflex times and atmospheric pressure alone are not reliable measures of injury severity.•Meaningful changes were seen in isolated spike event rates for a subset of TBI rats compared to uninjured controls.
