•Non-Hispanic blacks (NHBs) consume more added sugar than non-Hispanic whites (NHWs).•NHBs have higher sweet taste perception than NHWs.•Sweet taste perception was associated with sweet product consumption in NHBs.•Differences in sweet perception may affect preference for sweets.•Higher sweet taste perception in NHBs may contribute to increased sweet intake.
