•Elevated brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (a measure of arterial stiffness) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.•In our study of 446 women Japanese women aged ≥50 years, 37.2% developed increased arterial stiffness over the 10 years of follow-up.•Low bone mineral density was associated with increased arterial stiffness.•Women with low bone mineral density should be examined for cardiovascular disease.
