Vaccination with virus-like particles containing H5 antigens from three H5N1 clades protects chickens from H5N1 and H5N8 influenza viruses.

•Baculovirus vector was prepared for expression of VLPs containing H5 proteins derived from three clades of H5N1 virus.•Triple-clade H555 VLPs were prepared in Sf9 cells in a single manufacturing cycle.•VLPs showed hemagglutination activity and morphologically resembled influenza virions.•Vaccination with H555 VLPs protected chickens from H5N8 and two H5N1 influenza isolates.
