•Development of a sensitive technique for the extraction of Cryptosporidium oocysts from adult cattle faecal samples.•It increased sensitivity of detection from 100oocysts/g of faecal sample using conventional protocols to 5oocysts/g using the newly developed method.•This technique will be important for clarifying the role of adult cattle in C. parvum transmission on farm.
