•Children with DS showed elevated maladaptive behavior in the areas of attention problems, somatic complaints, and aggression.•Areas of maladaptive behavior accounted for 79% of the variance in school function outcomes Task Completion and Compliance.•Aggression significantly predicted Compliance, whereas attention problems significantly predicted Task completion.
