•The SEBT has good to excellent intrarater reliability in patients with ACL deficiency.•Construct validity of the posteromedial and posterolateral SEBT versus OLHD test, versus muscle strength is confirmed.•The posteromedial and posterolateral SEBT detect bilateral deficits in individuals with ACL deficiency.
