•A portable, software-defined CAN controller (SDCC) is proposed and discussed.•Besides working in simulation mode, SDCC is fully capable of real-time execution.•It can be connected to a physical bus and interact with real-world CAN devices.•SDCC is a flexible tool to experiment with novel ideas about the CAN protocol.
