•The WHODAS-2.0 has been recommended for the assessment of disability.•However, subscale robustness is understudied among Veterans receiving mental healthcare.•Exploratory and confirmatory analyses confirmed adequate fit of WHODAS 2.0 domains.•Some modifications may improve performance with treatment-seeking Veterans.
