Assessment of Oral Health Status and Self-Perceived Oral Health in Diabetic Patients Attending a Dental College in Vikarabad - Telangana

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a systemic disease with several complications affecting the quality of life. Diabetes is certain to be one of the most challenging health problems in the 21 st century. Uncontrolled diabetes has several oral complications. Awareness regarding maintenance of oral health is important for long-term control of diabetes. Objective: The purpose of the study is to assess the oral health status of diabetic people and their perception about their oral health. Methodology: Using a cross-sectional design with purposive sampling technique, 100 diabetic patients visiting the out-patient department of Sri Sai College of Dental Surgery and Hospital were invited to participate with their consents in the study. World Health Organization oral health assessment form 2013 and oral health questionnaire for adults were used for this study. Results: A total of 63 males and 37 females were participated in the present study. Mean decayed, missing, and filled surfaces score among the study participants was 5.7. Majority (99%) of the participants had gingival bleeding, 47% had 6-8 mm attachment loss with 40% having shallow pockets. 42% study individuals felt that their oral health was very good. Conclusion: Majority of patients were having poor oral health despite their perceived oral health status being good. Educating patients with diabetes about the importance of good oral self-care needs to become a priority of their oral health care providers.
