•Antibacterial hybrid organic-inorganic coatings were deposited on AISI 316L.•Silver nanoparticles were developed in situ through the densifying thermal treatment.•Structural properties of silver nanoparticles and nanocomposite film were analyzed.•Antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli cultures was analyzed.
