•Kinetics of jatropha oil cracking on Mo/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalysts were studied.•Acid and textural properties of HZSM-5 were affected by the presence of Mo.•Mo favored the production of deoxygenated compounds mainly monoaromatic hydrocarbons.•Modification of activation energy suggests different reaction pathways.
