•The transfers of Laveranian parasites of great apes are possible between different host species that live in close proximity.•Some mosquito species could be bridges between different host species even in forest environments characterised by humans.•The genetic barrier responsible for host specificity is not fully impermeable.•Host specificity of Laveranian also depend on ecological factors.
