•Water resistance nitrogen index (WRNI) was proposed for LNC estimation in winter wheat.•WRNI is an integrated narrow-band vegetation index.•WRNI was compared with existing conventional indices under different experimental conditions.•The integrated model improved estimation accuracy of LNC using in-situ remote sensing.
