Waist circumference and body mass index correlate with cerebral glucose metabolism in the temporal lobe in diabetic patients

Objectives: The effects of adiposity on brain are not well characterized. Previous studies have found that visceral fat accumulation in middle-age is associated with reduced cognitive function and an increased future risk of dementia. Waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) are indirect measurements of adiposity. We analyzed their effects on cerebral brain metabolism with F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18FDG-PET) in a diabetic patients group.
